Planning Your Ireland Trip? Why Killarney Should Be Your Home Base

Planning a trip to Ireland from so far away can be tricky. We see it all the time with visitors – you want to see everything, but hopping from hotel to hotel is exhausting. It’s hard to settle in and really get a feel for a place.

That’s why we always suggest setting up a base right here in Killarney. Think of it as your home in Kerry for a few days. You can unpack your bags properly and explore everything the area has to offer without the stress of constant travel.

You’re at the Heart of Everything Here

The best thing about Killarney is where it sits. You’re right in the middle of all the famous Kerry scenery, which makes it incredibly easy to get around.

  • The Ring of Kerry: The classic drive starts and ends right here in town. You can wake up and be on your way without any hassle.
  • The Dingle Peninsula: It’s an easy and beautiful day trip from Killarney to see the stunning cliffs and beaches of Dingle.
  • Killarney National Park: This is our backyard. The park isn’t something you have to drive to; the town is nestled right beside it. The woods, mountains, and lakes are part of everyday life here.

Exploring the Lakes and the Gap of Dunloe

Of course, the lakes are the heart of the park, and that’s where our family business comes in. We run the traditional red boats out across Lough Leane to the quiet, ancient island of Innisfallen. It’s a trip we’ve been doing for years, and it’s a real piece of Killarney life.

For a full day of it, our most popular trip is the Innisfallen Island & Gap of Dunloe Adventure. It’s a fantastic way to see two of Killarney’s greatest hits. The boat trip takes you through the lakes to the start of the Gap at Lord Brandon’s Cottage.

A tip from us: the best way to travel through the Gap of Dunloe is by horse and cart. The local jarveys will guide you up through the six mile pass. It’s a wonderful experience, and they’ll drop you right at Kate Kearney’s Cottage, where our shuttle can collect you.

A Few of Our Favourite Spots in the Park

Once you’ve seen the lakes, there’s still so much more to explore. Here are a few spots we always recommend to visitors:

  • Hike Torc Mountain: If you’re up for a bit of a walk, the view from the top of Torc is something special. You can see right across the lakes and mountains. On a clear day, it’ll take your breath away.
  • Discover Ross Castle: Down on the edge of the lake, Ross Castle is a proper 15th century Irish stronghold. It’s well worth taking the tour to hear the stories of the clans who lived there.
  • Wander Through Muckross Abbey: The old, ruined abbey is one of the most peaceful places in the park. It’s free to walk around, and the ancient yew tree in the cloister is magnificent.
  • Visit Muckross Traditional Farms: This is a brilliant trip back in time, especially if you have family with you. It shows what life was really like in the Irish countryside years ago.

Killarney Town Life

Killarney isn’t just a park; the town itself is full of life. After a day out exploring, there’s nothing better than heading into town for a good meal and some music.

If you’re looking for a proper, traditional pub, our friends at O’Connors on High Street run a brilliant spot. You’ll always find a warm welcome, a great pint, and some of the best traditional music around. Tell them we sent you!

How to Put It All Together: A Three Day Plan

  • Day 1: Start with the big adventure on our Innisfallen & Gap of Dunloe tour. In the evening, head into town for dinner and some music at O’Connors.
  • Day 2: Take a drive around the famous Ring of Kerry. Go at your own pace and stop for photos whenever you like.
  • Day 3: Spend the day closer to home. Visit Ross Castle in the morning and take a lovely walk up Torc Mountain in the afternoon.

We might be biased, but we think choosing Killarney as your base makes for a much more relaxing and enjoyable trip. You get to settle in and really get to know the place.

We hope to see you on the lakes soon.
