Island History & Heritage

Innisfallen Island has mesmerised visitors since 640 AD, home to the Augustinian abbey and the Annals of Innisfallen, chronicling nearly a millennium of Irish history. Even a 20-minute stop here offers a glimpse into medieval monastic life, stunning lake views, and occasional deer sightings—ideal for bloggers, photographers, or history buffs.

Why the Gap of Dunloe?

Forged by glacial forces between Purple Mountain and the MacGillycuddy Reeks, the Gap of Dunloe is iconic Killarney outdoors. Whether you’re walking, pedalling, or riding in a jaunting car, you’ll pass mirror lakes, legendary bridges such as the Wishing Bridge, and sweeping mountain panoramas—this is bucket-list Ireland.

Planning Tips

  • Bring comfortable hiking footwear, rain-proof layers, water, snacks, picnic or packed lunch
  • Bring cash—jaunting cars and cottage facilities are cash-only
  • Not suitable for travelers with limited mobility
  • Best from spring through early autumn, but dress for changeable weather and possible low lake water levels
